THE MAGNETIC DOT ENCYCLOPEDIA

Ultimate Sphere Like

by: Gustoph Follow

These creations have been dubbed "The Ultimate Sphere" by YouTube users, and each one takes 1860 magnets to create. They are rings of 6 magnets stacked 2 loops high, then assembled into a pentagon pattern. 12 pentagons makes an icosahedron. I filled the hole in the center of each pentagon by adding a loop of 5 magnets, with reverse polarity so that it would fit snugly into the hexagonal pattern that makes up the outer layer of this ball. I'm not sure who published this creation on the internet first, as there are nearly countless tutorials regarding the ultimate shape, but whoever it was has my sincere thanks! This is a fun shape to put together, and even my 7yr old daughter can assemble it without any frustration!

I forgot to mention- the silver magnets are actual Zen Magnets, made in the good old US of A. Or at least sold to me from the USA. The blue and red magnets are NeoBalls, from the same supplier... USA made...
The green glow in the dark magnets are from my supplier overseas! China... As well as my black magnets. I think they are called Neocubes instead of Neoballs... The coating on Neocubes isn't as thick as the coating on Neoballs, and because of this they are slightly more magnetic... However there is a trade off... The color is rubbing off of the black magnets faster than the color on the red or blue magnets, so eventually they will be silver instead of black... But I would rather have strong silver magnets over weak colorful ones anyday!
It's worth mentioning that I play with my balls everyday! HA phrasing! Seriously tho, I spend at least a couple of hours building stuff with my magnets EVERYDAY now for 8 weeks, and the black magnets are still black. It would take months of daily use to rub all of the color off the Chinese Neocubes.

Well it's been a year of me using my magnets every single day for a couple of hours each day... And it saddens me to report that my black magnets aren't black anymore. They are mostly silver now. However I've recently started ordering magnets from GetBuckyballs.Supramagnets.com and they are sending me OFFICIAL BUCKYBALLS! Original packaging and everything! So now my goal is to replace my faded black Chinese magnets with Official Black Buckyballs!
