THE MAGNETIC DOT ENCYCLOPEDIA

Seahorse Pride Like

The above image is the actual one submitted into Zen's - Contest 36: Single Set Simplification & titled - Seahorse Pride

216 (1 set) - Magnets Used (12) -18 Dot Hexes were formed and manipulated to create this design

Here's a nice representation of a Seahorse proudly riding his tail across the waters surface, like a dolphin. This was a little tricky getting it to balance properly, but a magnetic mirror under the scenes surface helped a lot. Once I managed to craft the head I could envision the seahorse's body also. A little trial & error and waalaa.

Finally I added a little post graphics by tinting the background with a blue overlay and adding a treeline with a nice mountain range, across the center, to create depth and the appearance of an outdoor lake scene with a night sky, or perhaps even a stormy sky, as a storm approaches from the west (left side..xD).

I took this image above a step further and added some reflection of the treeline & mountains.

Actually, the way it is setup up now is that I only added one object (treeline/reflection) to the original picture and tinted the background with a blue overlay, the rest is the original picture.

This one has an added Splash Effect

I enhanced the Splash Effect here by using the 'Smudge Tool' in Photoshop to create the circular waves around the Splash object, to better blend it into the scene.

Here it is in a nice hexagonal frame

Here it is in a nice circular frame.

***Original Picture***

This has only the (non color) treeline/shadow object added, without the color overlay

Here's a breakdown image of the Seahorse construction

The balancing on the tail trick, I'll leave up to you, as it is a rather tricky thing to do, but definitely possible. Gaining the right angle to create the illusion of a nicely smooth transition is also a trick of it's own (trial & error)..xD :-)

Here's a large version of the final image with the splash effect added.

So so so cute! I literally made an "aweeee" sound when I logged into Dotpedia.

Fun fact: There are over 50 species of seahorses within the "Hippocampus" family. In Ancient Greek, hippos means "horse" and "kampos" means "sea monster".

It's quite the miraculous build. You've done an honor to one of sciences most interesting of creatures. Thanks for sharing the construction Wayne.

Thanks...Until I started experimenting with only using (12) 18 dot hexagons, I would never of guessed I could make this with them..lol. So I figured I'd share the construction process for others to see how easy it actually was, once it was figured out that is..xD :-)
